reconnect with your physical self

February 19, 2018

In this day and age, connectivity is a funny subject. In a way, we’re more connected than ever. From FaceTime to Facebook, we’ve been provided with countless accessible tools to keep us in touch. The catch? Sometimes we forget to stop and reconnect with ourselves — our own physical being.

We spoke with licensed Massage Therapist and milk + honey Product Representative, Shannon Perry, to discuss ways to reconnect with your physical self.

On the importance of stretching:

“If you work at a computer screen all day, there’s good chance you’re not getting up enough. Email after email piles up and meetings can make your day so busy that you feel rushed and anxious about the smallest things. It is vital to our mental and physical well-being to take time for deep breaths, get up and walk around, or do a little stretch to increase circulation. Deep breaths allow us to take a moment from our crazy schedules and reconnect with our body. Deep breathing can decrease the feeling of stress and lower your blood pressure. When in my breaths, I like to take a moment to pay attention to where I may feel muscle soreness or tension and make those areas my focus for the day.”

How does Sports Massage fit into personal physical connectivity?

“Sports massage aids in preventing injuries and helps recovery time. It incorporates stretching, which we are all guilty of not making enough time for with our busy schedules. Heavily exercised muscles tend to become fatigued and can have trouble relaxing. Sports massage increases circulation and helps keep the muscles loose to prevent injuries from occurring. This is a great modality to keep an athlete going.”

What are the benefits of RAD Tools?

“I love these tools. I am on the go and don’t always have time for a massage. I can throw a ball in my bag and self massage in the car in traffic, while sitting at the desk on the computer, or after an intense workout relieve tension and increase my range of motion. The balls have a little bit of cushion/give so it’s not too painful to apply a little pressure against the wall or the back of a chair. I suggest using the tools at home on the floor after long day of sitting or standing to ensure you have a good range of motion in to your shoulders. I use the smallest ball on my hands after working on clients or typing all day to relax my hands as well. They offer items in different sizes and firmness so there’s something for everyone.” [Available at milk + honey locations]

Tips and tricks:

  • Drink plenty of water. The more you drink, the more you have to get up to use the restroom and refill your glass, forcing you to move!
  • Set an alarm on your calendar to “STRETCH!” or “DRINK WATER!” so you don’t forget to get up from the screen or deadline you’re working on.
  • Foam roll! Lay down for 15 minutes with the roller along the spine. Stretch your arms out to your side and allow gravity to do the work.

Ground cinnamon, clove, and ginger work together to plump your skin, improve evenness and elasticity, and provide antioxidant protection against harmful free-radicals. Lastly, ground pumpkin seed, which is packed with vitamins A and E, promotes cell rejuvenation, providing a barrier against skin-damaging external pollutants.

Get Rid of Neck Wrinkles With CosMedix Illuminate & Lift

July 19, 2017

While the skin on your face is delicate, there’s one part of your body that’s even more so: your neck and décollete. The skin on this area of your body is thinner and contains less natural oils than the skin on your face. Combined with sun damage, the skin on those areas can wrinkle and develop age spots faster than any other part of your body. That’s where the new CosMedix Illuminate & Lift Treatmen($70) comes in.

This neck and décollete treatment contains super ingredient, Edelweiss stem cell extract, which helps to brighten skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and firms loose, sagging skin. In an independent study of Edelweiss stem cell extract, people saw up to a 56 percent decrease in sagging skin on their neck in only three weeks and a 10 percent decrease in wrinkle depth in just six weeks.

The Best Way To Apply CosMedix Illuminate & Lift

After cleansing your face and neck, apply a small amount onto your hand. Place that amount on your décollete using upward strokes and gently massage the cream into your skin up to your jawline. For best results, use twice a day.

Which Massage Style Is Right For You?

July 11, 2017

Today, 2nd Street District massage therapist, Monique, gives us the 411 on the differences between three individual massage techniques.

Massage therapy is a vast field with a variety of different techniques and treatments. If you’re not a massage therapist, it can be a bit difficult choosing what type of technique is best for you. Well, take a deep breath. I’m going to break down the differences between the Big Three: Swedish, Deep Tissue, and Sports Massage.

To start, Swedish, Deep Tissue, and Sports Massage are all massage modalities.  Within each of these modalities, I’ll use different massage techniques to help you achieve your individual goals. I like to tell my clients to think of massage as a blank canvas. The primary colors are the basic techniques of Swedish, Deep Tissue, and Sports, which provide the foundation for any session. By mixing these colors, or techniques, you get different variations and modalities. All of these different massage techniques can be incorporated into your session so that it caters to your unique and individual needs.

The 5 Most Popular Summer Hairstyles

July 7, 2017

Hi everyone!

It’s Diano from the River Oaks salon — and here we are in the first beautiful days of summer. As we dive into the heat and humidity, I want to share my take on some of the most popular hairstyles of the season. But before I do, I should give you some context for how I approach these styles.

  • These “takes” can change based on my clients’ needs, expectations, and desires.
  • I want to create something for you that you love.
  • Together, we’re going to create a stylish, fashionable, fun, and easy hairstyle.

The Five Most Popular Summer Hairstyles

1. Pixie Cut

What Makes the Pixie Cut Great?

It’s lightweight, low-maintenance, and offers you more freedom. You’ll use considerably fewer haircare products and save on time in the mornings, making it a true wash-and-go style. It’s great for a power look and allows you to play with different color trends. If you’re looking to stand out, the pixie cut helps to accentuate facial features.

Take Into Consideration…

You may be seeing your stylist more often for quick trims and touch-ups — and you may need to wash your hair more often due to the higher concentration of natural oils.

2. Bangs

Why Should I Get Bangs This Summer?

Yes, bangs are a commitment game-changer, but there are so many styles to choose. From blunt (bold!) to sweeping (face-framing and romantic!) to the fringe (softer! choppier!), bangs can be the main focus of your look. They shape and enhance the eyes, and for those looking to cover your forehead, this is a simple solution.

Take Into Consideration…

Unless you plan on growing them out, bangs need touch-ups frequently. Contrary to popular frustration with “in-between” bangs, if you are growing them out, I can create fun ways to maintain them easily.
