What Kind of Facial Should I Get?

January 7, 2021
Woman receiving Signature Facial at milk + honey spa

While facials can transform your skin from dull to the divine, figuring out the best type of facial for your skin is often the first step. However, facial menus can be confusing, to say the least, and with so many different types, choosing the right one can be difficult. When making this decision, the important thing to remember is that skincare is never a one-size-fits-all kind of deal. Everyone’s skin is different, and it’s always a good idea to choose the facial that’s best suited to your particular skincare concerns.

Very often, spas offer a baseline facial, much like our Signature Facial, that offers a deep cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, a facial mask, and deep moisturization. However, once you schedule your facial, it’s important to speak with your esthetician so they can tailor the service to your specific skincare needs. In the meantime, here’s a look at some common skincare concerns and the specific facials recommended for each.

Best Type of Facial for Each Skin Type

There are several different types of facials, and the type that’s right for you depends on you skin type. To help you find out which type of facial you should get, find your skin type and view general details about what’s best for your skin including the type of facial we recommend.

For Normal/Dry Skin

Dry skin is caused by a lack of water in your skin’s cells; that lack of water, in turn, stops your skin from sloughing off dead skin cells as it should. So, for those with dry skin, exfoliation is key. Facials for normal to dry skin can and should include the usual hallmarks of a relaxing facial, including a deep cleansing, exfoliation, a hydration mask, and intense moisturization. For those with normal skin, the good news is that there are very few limitations on the types of products that can be used.

Our suggestion: Signature Facial, Lux Facial, Signature HydraFacial

For Combination Skin

Since combination skin has areas of oily and dry skin, opt for a facial that addresses both concerns without exacerbating either. While exfoliation and extraction remain important, the biggest difference could lie in moisturization. To that end, you should talk to your esthetician about using an oil-free moisturizer and a mask that addresses both concerns.

Our Suggestion: Signature Facial, Lux Facial, Signature HydraFacial

For Oily Skin

Oily skin attracts dirt and debris (think dead skin cells, makeup, environmental pollutants, etc.). So facials for oily skin should focus on deep cleansing, exfoliation (preferably a chemical exfoliant such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid), extraction, and toning. Masks used in facials for oily skin should remove excess oil and shrink pores.

Our Suggestion: Signature Facial, Lux Facial, Ultimate Facial, Signature HydraFacial

For Sensitive Skin

While all skin needs exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and boost the effect of serums and moisturizers,  those with sensitive skin should steer clear of harsh exfoliants during their facial, which can further irritate the skin. Consult with your esthetician about the best ways to gently exfoliate and what products to use that won’t irritate your skin.

Our Suggestion: Signature Facial, Signature HydraFacial

Book a Facial or Talk With an Esthetician to Find the Option That’s Right for You

Hopefully, this guide has helped clear things up for you. If you know which type of facial you’d like to get, you can book an appointment at milk + honey spa or you can talk with our experts to help determine which treatment is best for you.

During your visit, you’ll get a consultation with a licensed esthetician to help tailor your treatment to achieve your skincare goals. After getting the facial, the esthetician will also provide product recommendations and tips to incorporate into your skincare routine. FAQ

What Should You Wear to a Spa?

January 7, 2021
milk + honey Locker Room - Women Getting Dressed

First-time spa-goers tend to have a lot of questions, and rightly so, new experiences can be a bit stressful when you don’t know what to expect. Not to mention that when you have more questions than answers, a trip to the spa may not be the relaxing treat you thought it would be.

For those new to the spa experience, one of the most common questions asked is about the spa dress code.

The answer is that “spa clothes” don’t seem to vary much from spa to spa, and most places will provide a robe and slippers upon check-in. Once check-in is complete, clients are often led to a private room where they can change. If you’re looking for more information about spa etiquette and what you should wear, here’s everything you need to know before your visit.

DO I NEED TO BRING A ROBE AND SLIPPERS TO THE SPA?

You do not need to bring a robe and slippers to the spa, most spas will have these ready for you when you arrive. Depending on the treatments you receive throughout your visit, you may also switch to a new robe if it gets dirty or damp. The same also goes for towels, your spa should provide these for you so there is no need to bring your own. Additionally, some spas may also provide other amenities including showers and toiletries for use before and after your visit.

WILL SPAS OFFER DIFFERENT SIZES OF ROBES AND SLIPPERS?

Most spas will offer different sizes for robes and slippers to ensure guests feel comfortable and relaxed throughout their visit. The range and availability of sizes offered by the spa you’re visiting may vary depending on where you go, so if you are concerned about properly fitting attire it’s best to contact your spa before your appointment.

WHAT SHOULD YOU WEAR UNDER A ROBE?

What you wear under your robe will be highly dependent on what services you choose. If you choose to wear nothing under your robe, that’s completely fine. If you’re just going in for a massage, your underwear should suffice. It’s truly up to you.

Additionally, your massage therapist or esthetician will also let you know if anything else needs to be removed and you’ll be given time to privately undress before starting your treatment. For messy spa treatments that involve wraps, mud, and oils, your therapist will offer you a pair of disposable underwear so yours doesn’t get wet, dirty, or otherwise compromised.

It may be worth noting here, too, that spa therapists are taught special draping techniques, and only the part of your body that’s being worked on will be exposed at any given time. No doubt, these draping techniques have the added benefit of keeping any potential embarrassment or any body consciousness to a minimum.

WHAT TYPE OF FOOTWEAR SHOULD YOU WEAR?

As noted earlier, most spas will provide slippers or plastic flip-flops for you to wear during your visit, and when in doubt, you can always bring your own. However, if you do bring your own slippers or shoes their use may be restricted to certain areas of the spa for hygienic reasons. If this is your first visit to a new spa, it may be best to ask for some guidance when you book your appointment.

WHERE DO I PUT MY PERSONAL BELONGINGS WHEN VISITING THE SPA?

There’s no need to bring a bag to carry around your personal belongings while at the spa, as most spas provide guests with a locker to use during their visit. Even so, if possible we recommend leaving any valuables you don’t absolutely need at home such as electronics and jewelry.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO STAY IN YOUR COMFORT ZONE

Remember that discomfort is counterproductive to a relaxing day at the spa, and body consciousness doesn’t help either. The important thing to keep in mind is that you should only undress to the point where you still feel comfortable. Also, be sure to communicate with your spa therapist and let them know what you’re comfortable with. Moreover, if you’re nervous, don’t be afraid to share that with your therapist as well. You’re not the first jumpy client, and you certainly won’t be that last — your therapist may be able to offer some additional help with a trick or two to soothe shaky nerves.

If you’re looking to visit a spa in the near future, book an appointment at milk + honey spa and choose from a wide range of services including massages, facials, and more. For more information about what you should wear to the spa, contact them before your visit.

First-Time Xeomin Experience: What I Really Think

November 16, 2020

Age: 29

Skin Type: I would say my skin type is combination. I never drink enough water (though I try!), so it can get dehydrated. I’m prone to hormonal breakouts and depending on the season, my skin can also be pretty sensitive.

Feelings on medical aesthetics pre-treatment: I’ve always had really positive feelings in regards to getting “work” done. Perhaps that’s thanks to many years spent watching The Real Housewives or maybe it’s simply seeing the great results my friends have had with medical aesthetics procedures. Either way, it’s totally normalized to me. If you could wave a magic wand and love the way you look even more, why wouldn’t you? I can love myself and love that these enhancements are available thanks to modern science. And I do!

Walk us through your experience:

To be completely honest, my decision to get Xeomin was extremely last-minute. I was at milk + honey receiving a touch up for my Versa Lip Filler and mentioned to Allison (the amazing Nurse Practitioner at milk + honey) that I’ve always wanted to do something about my 11s. I explained that I (unwillingly) sleep with my forehead scrunched and often wake up with red lines on my forehead from furrowing my brow all night. We talked a little bit about Botox vs. Xeomin vs. Dysport and I ultimately chose Xeomin because it’s newer, doesn’t have the protein encasements or additives, and (let’s be honest) Gwyneth Paltrow had just posted about getting Xeomin on Instagram.

An Update on Reopening | May 27, 2020

May 27, 2020

After weeks of planning, protocol training, and implementing enhanced safety measures that exceed state and federal regulations, we are slowly reintroducing services at all milk + honey locations this week.

I’d like to provide in-depth detail about our reopening phases. I hope this transparency equips you with the necessary information to make the decision of when returning to milk + honey feels right for you.

First, I’d like to highlight some critical aspects of our employee requirements:

  • At this time, we are recalling employees on a volunteer basis. It is not mandatory that service providers return to work.
  • We have updated our paid-time-off policy to include an expanded sick leave benefit. This benefit is for all employees to use toward sickness, disability, medical appointments, or if a doctor has recommended that they self-isolate due to coming into close contact with a person who is lab-confirmed to have COVID-19.
  • We have partnered with Remedy, a fleet of open-air, drive-thru COVID-19 testing sites in Austin, Fort Worth, and Houston, that is available 24/7, 365 days a year. This partnership provides our team with free COVID-19 evaluation and testing.
  • All milk + honey employees are required to certify they have not been in close contact with anyone who is/was COVID-19 positive to their knowledge.
  • All milk + honey employees are required to have their temperature checked with a non-touch thermometer when they arrive to work. Any employee with a temperature of 100ºF or higher will be sent home.
  • Employees will continue to follow strict sanitation policies before, during, and after each service and/or client interaction.
  • Upon arrival at any milk + honey location, there will be additional safety and sanitation measures noted throughout the space. We will have visual social distancing markers in the retail and lobby area as well as the lounge to ensure physical space is kept between individuals.

We’re calling this current phase our “soft opening.” During this phase, we’re only offering salon treatments with reduced capacity and staggered appointments to allow for optimal social distancing. All hair-dryer/blowout and keratin services are suspended until further notice. At this time, we are prioritizing clients on the reservations waitlist as well as those who had appointments canceled due to our closure in March.

Phase 1 of our reopening begins on June 1 and we will expand our service offering to include massage, esthetics, and nail treatments. This phase is also voluntary for our employees. All services will be offered in a reduced capacity, in staggered appointment times, and with necessary modifications. In addition to blowout and keratin services, all Body Treatments, Couples Treatments, and the Warm Oil Head and Neck Massage and Hair Masque enhancements will be suspended until further notice. Any steam elements received in facial services will be replaced with hot towel compresses. Select online appointments will be available to reserve, but we will continue to primarily contact clients who have joined the reservations waitlist. If you have not done so already, you can join here

In Phase 2, we will continue to adhere to all of our enhanced sanitation and safety protocols that were put into place during our soft opening but will also increase our capacity to provide services. During this phase, we will open up additional shifts and invite more of our employees to return to work.

The following phases will be contingent upon feedback from employees and clients, our own and expert risk assessment of the spread and danger of the virus, and further monitoring of the COVID cases here in Texas. We will provide more detail around later Phases as we know more.

Throughout every phase, we will exceed COVID-19 regulations provided to us by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation and ask that the following precautions, listed below, be met by our clients. If they are not, we will kindly ask you to reschedule your appointment to a later date.

  • Clients are required to wear masks upon arrival and throughout the duration of their reservation. There will be minor exceptions, which include facials, facial waxing, and changing from a personal mask to a disposable one for haircolor services.
  • Only the client receiving the service is permitted to enter. Additional guests, including children, will not be permitted. We apologize for the inconvenience.
  • Social distancing will be enforced — with the exception of the service provider that a client is scheduled with.
  • All clients will be asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to their reservation to allow time for an extended check-in. Check-in will include taking the client’s temperature with a non-touch thermometer. If the temperature is above 100ºF, we will ask the client to reschedule.
  • Our concierge will verbally screen clients upon arrival and inquire about the following symptoms:
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath
    • Chills/shaking
    • Muscle pain/headache
    • Sore throat
    • Loss of taste or smell
    • Feeling feverish
    • Known contact with a person confirmed positive for COVID-19
  • A temporary sanitation surcharge will be added to each ticket.
  • We will make every effort to make payments touchless. The same card used to schedule the reservation should be physically shown to the Concierge at the time of checkout.
  • Clients should bring minimal personal items to their reservation.
  • Our amenities in the locker room are temporarily unavailable, including showers, robes, sandals, and styling products.
  • We encourage clients to bring their own water bottles but will provide water upon request in single-use cups.
  • We recommend that our Concierge handle all retail and ask that clients refrain from touching the products on the shelves. If a client would like to try something, they may request a sample in a single-use container.

As a business owner, mother, and fellow human navigating these murky waters, I know that reopening is a big step — one that will undoubtedly spark questions and concerns. While I feel confident that our team has done (and will continue to do) an exceptional job in addressing every aspect of employee and client safety, I welcome any and all questions you have regarding our reopening. The best path forward is to continue the conversation honestly, openly, and together as we move into these next phases.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

With optimism,
Alissa Bayer

What’s on our list?

Kamali Dramatic Arc Earrings // Pink Opal

I’m obsessed with these statement-meets-minimal earrings. Even now, I’d love to wear these on a Zoom conference with my hair pulled back.

Anya Cuff // Brass

I love stacking delicate bracelets. This simple cuff would be an immediate staple in my #armparty (yes, that’s still a thing.)

Small Liya Tote // Black

If your handbag preference lands somewhere between statement tote and simple over-the-shoulder vibes, this bag is the perfect solution. I love that it’s big enough to tote a book to the park, but small enough to feel easy and convenient.

Join Us in Helping Our Employees

March 20, 2020

We made the tough, but right, decision to close our location doors earlier this week. Since then, we’ve been working tirelessly to support our incredible service providers and support staff, who are not currently able to perform their daily schedule of treatments and tasks due to this unprecedented situation, by providing ongoing healthcare and paid time-off benefits, daily communication regarding resources, and an employee assistance fund. Here’s how you can contribute:

  1. Join Our Reservations Waitlist. We can’t wait to see you. Click through to join our waitlist and you’ll be the first to be notified of our locations’ reopening. A Note To Our Communities

March 14, 2020

As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to impact our communities nationwide and abroad, our hearts and healing thoughts go out to those who have already been affected. We understand that this issue is cause for concern and caution, and we are monitoring the situation closely via the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization.

Rest assured that as this situation develops, we will continue to make decisions based on the health and well-being of our clients, employees, and community at large. Today, we want to share what we’re doing in all of our locations to ensure your safety.

We have always exceeded the strict sanitation guidelines set forth by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, and will continue to implement these preventative actions to limit potential exposure to viruses or unwanted bacteria.

What We Have Always Done

  • The daily cleaning and sanitization of our spaces and tools. Multi-use implements (hair clippers, hair scissors, hair combs, nail clippers, tweezers) are washed, sanitized, and sterilized in a UV sterilizer after every client.
  • Single-use items (gloves, tissues, orangewood sticks, cotton balls, thread, extension pads, nail buffer blocks, and gauze) are disposed of after each service.
  • Chlorine-bleach solution is used in every laundry wash.
  • Employees are required to wash their hands after using the restroom, after eating, and before and after each service.

Additional Measures We’re Taking

  • EPA-registered disinfectant is used to wipe down frequently-touched objects, such as door handles, phones, computers, counters, and other high-traffic areas.
  • Ethyl-alcohol hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol is available throughout the space for both staff and client use.
  • We encourage our team to stay home if they, or a loved one, feel sick as it is of the utmost importance to us that we all exercise caution. We offer paid time off and subsidized medical benefits so that our employees feel supported and cared for.

  • We encourage clients to stay home if they feel sick. We are happy to reschedule appointments, especially as we all continue to exercise caution.

Our spa and salon locations, as well as milkandhoney.com, will remain open and we will continue to ensure a safe, exceptional experience for all of our clients and employees. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns.

How to Help Your Blowout Last 5 Days

September 16, 2019

If you ask me, blowouts are among life’s greatest luxuries. Sure, a full-on spa day is also a treat, but it requires both a larger time and financial commitment. On the flip side, there’s always 45 minutes open somewhere on your calendar, which is exactly how long it takes to receive a blowout at SALON by milk + honey. From the head massage to the light-airy hairstyle, I always leave the salon fully relaxed and feeling 10/10 confident. I’ve done quite a bit of R+D to develop tricks that extend the post-blowout feeling and I’m here to share what works for my hair.
