Bye Bye Breakouts: Acne Awareness Month

June 13, 2024

June is Acne Awareness Month, and this month we’re shining a spotlight on a common yet often misunderstood skin condition that affects millions worldwide. Join us as we raise awareness, share insights, and empower individuals to navigate the journey to clearer, healthier skin.

Acne is a common skin concern that affects people of all ages and skin types, often causing frustration and embarrassment. From hormonal fluctuations to excess sebum production, the causes of acne are diverse and multifaceted. However, with the advancements in medSPA treatments, managing and treating acne has become more accessible and effective than ever before. In this blog post, we’ll explore some of the most innovative medSPA solutions for banishing breakouts and achieving clearer, smoother skin.

Understanding Acne: Before diving into treatment options, it’s essential to understand the underlying causes of acne. Acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to the formation of whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, and cysts. Hormonal changes, genetics, diet, and skincare products can all contribute to the development of acne.

MedSPA Solutions:

  1. BroadBand Light (BBL) Treatment: BroadBand Light (BBL) is a cutting-edge photofacial treatment that harnesses the power of light energy to target acne at its source. By delivering multiple wavelengths of light into the skin, BBL promotes collagen production, reduces inflammation, and eliminates acne-causing bacteria. The BBL Clear treatment specifically targets acne, using a combination of blue, yellow, and infrared light to clear breakouts and promote skin healing.
  2. VI Chemical Peels: VI Chemical Peels are multi-faceted treatments designed to address various triggers and symptoms of acne. The VI Peel Purify is formulated to sweep away dead skin cells, unclog pores, and eliminate acne bacteria, resulting in fewer breakouts and smoother skin texture. For those dealing with acne scars and hyperpigmentation, the VI Peel Purify with Precision Plus offers a comprehensive solution by targeting melanin production and promoting skin renewal.
  3. Hydrafacials: Hydrafacials offer a customizable facial experience that combines exfoliation, extraction, and hydration to address acne and improve overall skin health. By delivering acne treatments directly to the skin, Hydrafacials can effectively target current breakouts, exfoliate at a deeper level, and prevent acne from returning. When combined with other medSPA treatments, Hydrafacials create a foundation for optimal results.

It’s important to note that consistency is key when it comes to treating acne with medSPA solutions. Patients may require multiple sessions spaced over several weeks to achieve optimal results. Additionally, proper skincare maintenance and a healthy lifestyle can help enhance the effectiveness of medSPA treatments and prolong their benefits.

With the advancements in medSPA technology and treatments, managing acne has never been more achievable. Whether you’re dealing with occasional breakouts or persistent acne, there’s a medSPA solution tailored to your needs. By incorporating innovative treatments like BBL, VI Chemical Peels, and Hydrafacials into your skincare routine, you can bid farewell to breakouts and hello to clearer, smoother skin.

Mental Health, Q+A

Q+A with Imani Semien

May 21, 2024

Imani Semien is a yoga instructor, space holder and Reiki practitioner in Houston, Tx. Other titles that Imani holds are mother, wife and educator. As a Louisiana native, Imani decided to move to Houston in the midst of the global pandemic in 2020 with hopes to begin a new life and start her career in education. As an educator, the stresses of work and motherhood pushed her into mindfulness practices such as meditation, yoga and journaling. Imani now holds space for other women and mothers to find healing within themselves using these same practices. One of her future goals is to open a wellness center that provides many forms of holistic healing treatments along with pre and postnatal education and care.

Q+A

1. How did you begin your work?

I began my work in 2021 shortly after the COVID pandemic ended. I found myself overwhelmed re-entering the workforce after spending much of 2020 in isolation. As a new mom starting a new career, I experienced anxiety and high levels of stress from constantly worrying about the wellbeing of my children while I was at work. I knew that many other women and mothers experienced this as well and I wanted to create a space where women could gather to work through these stressful experiences while also building connections within the community. I received my yoga teacher certification in 2022 and started holding Women’s Healing Circles shortly after. It was a journey to build my confidence to speak on topics that I was still working through, but from those experiences I have made so many connections in the Houston area.

2. Why did you want to go into this type of work?

I wanted to get into this type of work because so many women feel that they need to have a strong face and smile through everything they experience, but truthfully, every person deserves a safe space where they can release all of the things that may cause stress or anxiety. Coming from experience, it is hard to be vulnerable sometimes because I think people are judging me or I feel that I should be more grateful for the things I have. While it is important to have gratitude, we must also acknowledge that some of the things we love can contribute to our stress levels. I want to be a safe space where people can be vulnerable, let down their walls and just exist without judgment or social expectations.

3. How do you stay mindful when things get stressful?

When things get stressful for me, I try my best to name all of the feelings that I experience in that moment. Next, I empty my brain in my journal or in the notes section of my phone. I describe everything that I am feeling, every moment within the day that may have upset me or thrown me off of schedule and any stressful thoughts I may have had up until that point. After writing, I sit silently for about 30 seconds breathing slowly. Lastly, I allow myself to release these thoughts by simply stating “These thoughts/emotions do not serve me. It is time to let you go.” Releasing emotions always gives me a fresh start of my day no matter what time it is.

4. Why is mental health important to you?

Mental health is important to me because everything begins in the mind. Every thought and idea is created in your mind then is physically manifested in the world around you. If we have poor mental health, then our thoughts and ideas may become dark which results in living in darkness, sadness and misery. Good mental health turns into a higher quality of life.

5. What do you hope people learn from the work you do?

I hope people learn different ways to stay mindful and prioritize mental health through day to day life.

Q+A with Liz Davis

Liz Davis is a clinical hypnotist, energy healer, yoga teacher, and a spiritual guide. She has been in wellness professionally since 2009. Every service Liz offers has had a direct and transformative shift in her own life. Through her own healing journey, She has gained the tools and training to support you, in your healing journey. It is her greatest wish to work together. To reveal your truth. To grow. To heal.  To claim the life you deserve of health, wealth, and happiness.

Q+A

1. How did you begin your work?

I began doing this work after I left NYC and the fashion industry. It was through my own healing experience with reiki and crystal healing.

2. Why did you want to go into this type of work?

I wanted to get into this work when I finally was able to feel my inner light reactivated. My first session changed something in me that I prayed for years that regular therapy wasn’t able to touch on. This was something deeper, more profound, and spiritual. I wanted to be able to give others what had been giving to me.

3. How do you stay mindful when things get stressful?

This is a great question, a few different things I love to do, but most deal with coming back into my body and out of my head. I love to practice yoga, ride my bike, or dance my heart out! I also really love to journal when I can’t seem to quite my mind.

4. Why is mental health important to you?

Because life is too short and too beautiful to waste a moment of it.

5. What do you hope people learn from the work you do?

I hope that people learn that you can create the life of your dreams. No matter what you have endured, transformation is possible if you are willing to be radically open and honest with yourself. I know what rock bottom feels like and I know what it is to grow from that and what a dream it is to be the co-creator of your life.

Get Perfect Skin by New Year’s Eve (Seriously)

December 22, 2013

As a rule of thumb, winter temps and holiday indulgence don’t mesh well where perfect skin is concerned. Luckily, we love a good loop hole, and this is a really, really good one.

Commit this equation to memory:

Ultrasonic Treatment + Cosmedix Pure Enzymes + drinking (lots of) water = healthy, pretty, smooth skin.

What does it all do?

facial pre masque

The Ultrasonic Treatment employs high-frequency vibration to gently exfoliate dead-skin cells for a cleaner, healthier complexion sans redness, swelling, and irritation commonly associated with microdermabrasion. It diminishes wrinkles and fine lines by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin; it aids in penetrating topical skin products beyond the epidermis through Sonophoresis.

Cosmedix Pure Enzymes This gentle, exfoliating mask harnesses the natural power of cranberry enzymes and lactic acid to scrub away facial impurities and de-congest blocked pores. As active ingredients exfoliate, protect, and revitalize the skin, potent, oil-free moisturizers add a dewy softness to blemish-prone skin.

How to Keep Calm and Carry On This Holiday Season

December 21, 2013

three stooges turkey edit useWritten by guest editor and milk + honey licensed massage therapist, Matt Walker

I love the holidays, but let’s face it, they can be pretty overwhelming. With the trifecta of Thanksgiving, Yuletide festivities, and New Year’s Eve in our midst, it’s inevitable that we get sucked in, overrun, depleted, lifted, and celebrated. Regardless of where you’re at in this spirited procession, you’ll want to take care of the “basics,” as in, first and foremost, take care of yourself. This also means that it’s a really good idea to keep things in perspective, and when all else fails, take refuge (or you know, a night off).

Here are some other life reminders — trust me, we all need a little call to action, and this is mine to you.

Have a self-care plan, one that embraces moderation:

  • Try hard to get in about eight hours of sleep — here’s what’s in it for you.
  • Daily movement is key. Or if an everyday schedule doesn’t work, try for 30 minutes of intense exercise a couple times a week.
  • Whole, nutritiously dense foods with a minimum of ingredients, such as vegetables and meats present the most reliable pre-prescription for health.
  • Be merry. That’s a given.
  • Always get home safely.

And when you know “moderation” might not be in the cards for your night out, be honest with yourself.

  • Know when you intend on pushing past your limits, and under which conditions.
  • Avoid sugary treats and alcohol until sundown.
  • Try to clear part of your day after the company party.
  • Carpool or take a cab home on the nights you plan on over-indulging.

We can all lose a grip on things, especially when the holiday energy is high. Remember: a little perspective goes a long way. No holiday — no day, for that matter — has to be perfect. So, be thankful for the time you’re spending with family and friends. Count your blessings.

When all else fails, it’s time to take refuge:

  • Move a little slower.
  • Savor quiet time.
  • Go outside.
  • Cross something off your list without doing it, and go do something for yourself instead.
  • Stay home.
  • Schedule a massage.
  • Visit a sauna.
  • Meditate.
  • Pray.

In the grand scheme of things, the holidays punctuate our daily lives, helping us to reaffirm those very things we would cherish everyday if the ideal were actual. It’s the best time of year to reflect, rejoice, and recharge for the year ahead.

Happy holidays, everyone!
