While the sun is a great source of vitamin D, it can also cause serious damage to your skin. Prolonged sun exposure can lead to sunburn, premature aging, and in some cases, it can also cause skin cancer. Here are seven easy things you can do to protect your skin this Summer.
1. Slather on the Sunscreen
This may be an obvious tip, but it’s an important one: apply sunscreen. Sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays able to penetrate your skin’s dermis layer and can cause premature wrinkling, skin aging, and even, skin cancer. UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburns. Supergoop! sunscreen is one of the only sunscreen brands that provides broad spectrum protection — use it!
2. Introduce Vitamin C into Your Beauty Routine
Enhance your antioxidant protection with CosMedix Pure C. Antioxidants combat against harmful free radicals. Free radicals are uncharged molecules that damage your skin by locking onto positive electrons and weaken your skin’s cell membrane, causing it to die. Pure C utilizes 100% pure L-ascorbic acid crystals — the most potent form of vitamin C — to encourage certain proteins to produce more collagen and elastin in the skin.
3. Wear Protective Clothing
Add another layer of sun protection by wearing protective clothing. Wear long-sleeve bathing suits, hat, and sunglasses to help protect yourself aginst the sun’s rays. If you’re really committed, look for clothing with a high Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF). The UPF rating measures how much UV protection a fabric provides, and similar to the SPF rating, the higher UPF, the more protection that clothing item provides you.
4. Relax Indoors
Avoid the outdoors (or at the very least, being in direct sunlight) between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. During this time, the sun’s UV rays are the strongest. You can calculate how much UV exposure you’re getting by following the “shadow rule.” If your shadow is longer than you, the UV exposure is low. If your shadow is shorter than you, the UV exposure is higher.
5. Stay Fresh-Faced
A HydraFacial is excellent at removing impurities, cleansing your skin, and minimizing sun damage. This treatment infuses antioxidants and peptides into the deepest layer of your skin and works to erase sun damage with no downtime. The HydraFacial treatment is available at our 2nd Street District, Hill Country Galleria, and Houston locations.
6. Skip the Tan
Tanning can cause irreversible damage to your skin’s cells. If you want to achieve that sun-kissed glow, try the Whish Coconut Milk Self Tanner. Not only does this self-tanner provide you with a gorgeous bronzed look, it also contains natural skin-firming ingredients. It’s free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and delivers the perfect color without a streaky finish.
7. Hydrate Your Skin
Dry, dehydrated skin in the summer can actually be a symptom of prolonged sun exposure. Nearly 63% of your skin contains water and long exposure to the sun can increase the rate of water evaporation from the skin’s surface. Hydrate with milk + honey Body Cream No. 16, Body Cream No. 22, and Body Cream No. 46. These Body Creams contain a nourishing blend of organic aloe vera leaf juice and shea fruit butter, which restore the skin’s suppleness and moisture.
