What Is A HydraFacial And How Does It Work?

June 23, 2021

With more and more people leaning into the natural (read: no makeup) look and praised by celebrities like Kate Winslet and Amy Poehler, the HydraFacial has created quite a buzz in the skincare industry. In fact, it’s estimated that one HydraFacial is performed globally every 15 minutes. Frequently offered by dermatologists and in spas, this patented skin treatment is used to treat a slew of skin concerns such as acne, dryness, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles. Ahead we’ll take a closer look at the HydraFacial and explore the benefits to help you determine if it’s right for you.

WHAT IS A HYDRAFACIAL?

The HydraFacial, also referred to as HydraDermabrasion (or HydraFacial MD), is similar to microdermabrasion because it exfoliates the skin. But while microdermabrasion uses aluminum oxide crystals to achieve these results, the HydraFacial is a multi-step process that uses chemical exfoliants paired with deep hydration. The HydraFacial bears some similarities to a regular facial, but it tends to offer more dramatic results.

Moreover, the HydraFacial is far more soothing to the skin, so much so that it is commonly offered one to two weeks after more invasive procedures like chemical peels or laser treatment. Not only does the HydraFacial effectively slough off dead skin after these treatments, but it also soothes and hydrates the skin.

BENEFITS OF A HYDRAFACIAL

The HydraFacial thoroughly cares for your skin, providing cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, and hydration, including Vortex-Fusion® of antioxidants, peptides, and hyaluronic acid. It also removes dead skin cells and extracts impurities while simultaneously bathing the new skin with cleansing, hydrating and moisturizing serums. The treatment is soothing, refreshing, non-irritating, non-invasive, non-surgical, and immediately effective.

HOW DOES A HYDRAFACIAL WORK?

Usually performed by a licensed esthetician or a dermatologist, a HydraFacial is a three-step process facilitated by a mechanized wand. During the procedure, the tips of the wand are swapped out for each step of the process.

If you’re considering a HydraFacial treatment, here’s what you can expect:

Step 1: Deep Clean And Peel – The first step of the process uses a tip that essentially works like a vortex to clean out dirt and debris from deep within your pores. Additionally, during this step, the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin are exfoliated with a series of chemical exfoliants such as lactic acid, glycolic acid salicylic acid.

Step 2: Extraction – The second step of the HydraFacial uses a tip that extracts or vacuums any remaining debris from clogged pores.

Step 3: Deep Hydration – The final step of the HydraFacial uses a pen-like attachment to apply a hydrating serum (typically consisting of hyaluronic acid and peptides) to the skin.

HYDRAFACIAL AFTERCARE

The results of a HydraFacial are immediate. Following the procedure, most people will notice brighter, more radiant skin, more even skin tone, and there should be no signs of irritation, redness, or peeling.

Moreover, the great thing about the HydraFacial is that there is no downtime. And while there’s nothing specific to do regarding aftercare, it’s best to steer clear of any type of exfoliation or other invasive procedures following a HydraFacial.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU GET A HYDRAFACIAL?

There are no hard-and-fast rules about the frequency of HydraFacial treatments, but as you may suspect, it really depends on the needs of your skin. While some people may require a HydraFacial every two weeks to achieve their desired results, others can stick to doing a HydraFacial once a month just as well. Your esthetician or dermatologist can help you determine the frequency that’s right for you based on your skin type and your ultimate skincare goals.

HOW MUCH DOES A HYDRAFACIAL COST?

Typically, HydraFacials will cost about $175 per session. The Milk & Honey HydraFacial, for example, costs $175 for a 45-minute session. Keep in mind that there are add-ons available as well, such as lightening treatments for hyperpigmented spots or light therapy add ons that use red or blue light to increase collagen production or eliminate bacteria, respectively. If you’re interested in scheduling a HydraFacial, book an appointment at your local milk + honey spa!

Before and After: How the HydraFacial Saved My Skin

January 18, 2017

If you haven’t experienced a HydraFacial yet, what are you waiting for? It’s nothing short of amazing. And if you’ve ever heard one of your friends singing its praises, I promise you — that friend is not exaggerating. In fact, I’m about to join in the chorus and share a few nuggets, including a before-and-after shot, from my most recent HydraFacial treatment.

My skin type: Combination Dry

Current state of skin: Dry and red irritation; oily patches (mostly cheek area), clogged pores, and a hormonal breakout around the jawline. Oof. General dullness. I’ve been traveling more than usual and the stress — and indulgence — of the holidays certainly caught up to my skin. Between major climate changes (cold, frigid Boston air vs. Austin’s warmer temps) and over 30 hours of flight time (Austin > Japan > Shanghai > Austin > Boston > Austin) logged, let’s just say my skin wasn’t looking its best.

Goals for HydraFacial: I know not everything can be “cured” in one session, but I wanted to leave with clear pores and lots of hydration. My skin was screaming for it.

Results Post-HydraFacial: Glowy-ness! My skin feels rejuvenated and undeniably clean. It’s the most hydrated version of itself right now and I couldn’t be more pleased. The jawline breakouts, while still visible to me, have been stopped in their tracks. Finally, the sallow tone of my skin is gone. Success!

See my before-and-after shots…

4 Skin Types and How to Treat Them

April 9, 2024

When it comes to skincare, one size definitely does not fit all. Your skin type plays a crucial role in determining the products and routines that will work best for you. Whether you have acne-prone, dry, oily, or combination skin, understanding your skin type is the first step towards achieving a radiant complexion. Let’s delve into the characteristics of each skin type and how to care for them effectively.

Acne-Prone Skin:

Acne-prone skin is characterized by frequent breakouts, including blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. This skin type is often prone to inflammation and can be sensitive to certain skincare ingredients. To manage acne-prone skin effectively, it’s essential to use gentle, non-comedogenic products that won’t clog pores or exacerbate breakouts. Look for ingredients like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and niacinamide, which can help control acne while soothing inflammation. Consistency is key, so establish a daily skincare routine and stick to it to keep breakouts at bay.

Product Recommendations:

  • Bakuchiol Treatment by milk + honey, This serum-plus-moisturizer hybrid treatment is formulated with bakuchiol, a plant-based alternative to retinol. It helps improve the appearance of fine lines, premature aging skin, and skin tone — without the common side effects of retinols (photosensitivity and skin irritation). This powerhouse treatment contains hyaluronic acid and antioxidant-rich botanicals, such as black willow bark extract, edelweiss stem cell extract, and bladderwrack, which provide a trifecta of exfoliating, skin-brightening, and skin-softening properties.
  • Clear Deep Cleansing Mask by COSMEDIX, Clear is a clarifying deep cleansing face mask that helps improve skin tone and texture by gently drawing out impurities to help unclog pores for a clearer-looking complexion that glows. Clear is formulated with kaolin clay, salicylic acid and sulfur to help gently exfoliate and trap excess oil and impurities that could potentially clog pores. Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, helps improve skin texture, while soothing natural botanicals help reduce the appearance of redness without leaving skin tight or dry.

Spa Services:

  • Acne-Targeting Facial, Our acne targeting treatment combines potent, yet gentle products with expert techniques to leave you with a glowing complexion. This service includes a same day peel, light therapy, lymphatic drainage and extractions.

MEDSpa Services:

  • BBL Photofacial, BBL Photofacial is a corrective phototherapy treatment that uses Broadband Light (BBL) to target signs of aging, sun damage, and acne.
  • VI Peel Purify, The VI Peel Purify is a highly effective treatment for acne and addresses a variety of concerns caused by acne symptoms. This unique formula combination increases cellular turnover to open pores and reduce comedones, acne, and balance the skin for fewer breakouts.

Dry Skin:

Dry skin lacks moisture and often feels tight, rough, or flaky. This skin type may be prone to redness and irritation, especially in harsh weather conditions. To combat dryness, opt for hydrating skincare products that nourish and replenish the skin’s moisture barrier. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides, which attract and retain moisture. Additionally, incorporate a rich moisturizer into your daily routine, and consider using a humidifier to add moisture to the air in your home.

Product Recommendations:

  • Intense Hydration by milk + honey, Intense Hydration Cream is just that — an intensely rich, luxurious moisturizer that boosts hydration, restores luminosity, and supports dry, tired skin.
  • Luxe Face Oil by milk + honey, Formulated with antioxidant-rich botanical extracts and natural sources of Vitamin E including Prickly Pear Seed Oil and Baobab Seed Oil, the Luxe Face Oil is designed to boost hydration and brighten the appearance of skin tone, improving the look of skin’s natural elasticity.
  • Hyaluronic Sea Serum by OSEA, This fast-absorbing, concentrated serum smooths the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. OSEA’s newly upgraded formula, powered by two molecular weights of hyaluronic acid, seaweed and snow mushroom, works to restore and maintain optimal moisture levels, keeping your skin hydrated any time of day. Clinically and dermatologist tested.

Spa Services:

  • HydraFacials, Our Signature HydraFacial MD® treatment incorporates hydra-dermabrasion, painless extractions, and an infusion of powerful, nourishing nutrients, enhanced by a neck + décolleté treatment to target dry skin.
  • Upgrade to the Ultimate HydraFacial MD®, and achieve maximum results. This treatment combines hydra-dermabrasion, painless extractions, neck + décolleté treatment, detoxifying lymphatic drainage, and your choice of the Brightening or DermaBuilder treatment. This brilliant treatment finishes with ReGen GF™, our age-defying growth factor serum, leaving your skin radiant and younger-looking.

MEDSpa Services:

  • SKINVIVE, Smooth your skin and boost hydration with SKINVIVE. A Hyaluronic Acid microdroplet injectable designed to give you visible glow for up to 6 months after one treatment.

Oily Skin:

Oily skin tends to produce excess sebum, leading to a shiny complexion and enlarged pores. Individuals with oily skin may be more prone to acne and breakouts due to the accumulation of oil and debris in the pores. To manage oily skin, focus on balancing oil production without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Look for lightweight, oil-free products that mattify the skin and regulate sebum production. Ingredients like witch hazel, salicylic acid, and tea tree oil can help control oiliness and minimize the appearance of pores. Incorporating a gentle cleanser and a lightweight moisturizer into your skincare routine can help maintain a healthy balance.

Product Recommendations:

  • Gel Cleanser by milk + honey, The Gel Cleanser is a gel-to-foam face wash that gently, yet thoroughly, removes dirt, excess oil, and impurities, leaving skin soft and moisturized.
  • Oil-free moisturizers

Spa Services:

  • LUX Facial, A customized 75 minute facial, this treatment uses microcurrent technologies. The skin is stimulated to encourage collagen production and elastin production. Your esthetician will customize this service to fit your skin care needs.
  • Express HydraFacial®, This treatment is the foundation of Express HydraFacial®: a non-invasive, multi-step treatment that combines the benefits of hydra-dermabrasion, automated painless extractions, and an infusion of antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, and peptides. Experience instant results with no downtime or irritation.

Combination Skin:

Combination skin is characterized by a mix of different skin types, with some areas being oily (usually the T-zone) and others being dry or normal. Managing combination skin can be challenging, as you need to address the needs of multiple skin types simultaneously. To care for combination skin effectively, use targeted products that address the specific concerns of each area. Consider using a gentle cleanser, followed by a balancing toner to remove excess oil and impurities without over-drying the skin. Additionally, use lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizers that hydrate dry areas without exacerbating oiliness. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen daily to protect your skin from sun damage and premature aging.

Product Recommendations:

  • Atmosphere Protection Cream by OSEA, Help your skin face the day. This everyday lightweight moisturizer hydrates while providing barrier protection to skin exposed to environmental pollutants. OSEA’s antioxidant-rich formula is full of seaweed, shea butter and omega-rich oils. Quickly absorbs to a silky finish, ideal under sunscreen or makeup. An OSEA favorite that’s soon to be yours.
  • Charcoal Clay Masque by milk + honey, Activated charcoal and bentonite clay effectively pull impurities from the skin. Organic green tea leaf oil reduces excess sebum and bacteria while organic aloe leaf juice keeps skin hydrated. This refreshing masque helps to minimize the look of redness and inflammation, as well as diminishes the appearance of pores.
  • Multi-tasking serums designed to balance and hydrate without clogging pores

Spa Services:

  • Signature Facial, Our multi-step process is carefully customized to your skin type and skin care needs. Includes cleansing, masques, extractions, toning, and intense moisture.
  • Same-Day Peels, A corrective solution to improve the skin’s texture and health by removing dead and damaged outer layers of skin. Choose from: Blueberry Smoothie Peel, Benefit Peel, Purity Peel, or Blueberry Jessner.

Understanding your skin type is essential for creating an effective skincare routine that addresses your specific needs. Whether you’re battling acne, combating dryness, managing oiliness, or navigating combination skin, there are products and treatments available to help you achieve a healthy, radiant complexion.

What Kind of Facial Should I Get?

January 7, 2021
Woman receiving Signature Facial at milk + honey spa

While facials can transform your skin from dull to the divine, figuring out the best type of facial for your skin is often the first step. However, facial menus can be confusing, to say the least, and with so many different types, choosing the right one can be difficult. When making this decision, the important thing to remember is that skincare is never a one-size-fits-all kind of deal. Everyone’s skin is different, and it’s always a good idea to choose the facial that’s best suited to your particular skincare concerns.

Very often, spas offer a baseline facial, much like our Signature Facial, that offers a deep cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, a facial mask, and deep moisturization. However, once you schedule your facial, it’s important to speak with your esthetician so they can tailor the service to your specific skincare needs. In the meantime, here’s a look at some common skincare concerns and the specific facials recommended for each.

Best Type of Facial for Each Skin Type

There are several different types of facials, and the type that’s right for you depends on you skin type. To help you find out which type of facial you should get, find your skin type and view general details about what’s best for your skin including the type of facial we recommend.

For Normal/Dry Skin

Dry skin is caused by a lack of water in your skin’s cells; that lack of water, in turn, stops your skin from sloughing off dead skin cells as it should. So, for those with dry skin, exfoliation is key. Facials for normal to dry skin can and should include the usual hallmarks of a relaxing facial, including a deep cleansing, exfoliation, a hydration mask, and intense moisturization. For those with normal skin, the good news is that there are very few limitations on the types of products that can be used.

Our suggestion: Signature Facial, Lux Facial, Signature HydraFacial

For Combination Skin

Since combination skin has areas of oily and dry skin, opt for a facial that addresses both concerns without exacerbating either. While exfoliation and extraction remain important, the biggest difference could lie in moisturization. To that end, you should talk to your esthetician about using an oil-free moisturizer and a mask that addresses both concerns.

Our Suggestion: Signature Facial, Lux Facial, Signature HydraFacial

For Oily Skin

Oily skin attracts dirt and debris (think dead skin cells, makeup, environmental pollutants, etc.). So facials for oily skin should focus on deep cleansing, exfoliation (preferably a chemical exfoliant such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid), extraction, and toning. Masks used in facials for oily skin should remove excess oil and shrink pores.

Our Suggestion: Signature Facial, Lux Facial, Ultimate Facial, Signature HydraFacial

For Sensitive Skin

While all skin needs exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and boost the effect of serums and moisturizers,  those with sensitive skin should steer clear of harsh exfoliants during their facial, which can further irritate the skin. Consult with your esthetician about the best ways to gently exfoliate and what products to use that won’t irritate your skin.

Our Suggestion: Signature Facial, Signature HydraFacial
