2ND Sundays and a free gift from milk + honey

June 2, 2011

Summer starts June 12. Well, not technically (that’s June 21), but Sunday, June 12 is the beginning of 2ND Sundays at the 2ND Street District.

About 2ND Sundays

Starting June 12th, the 2ND Street District will host 2ND Sundays. We invite you to brunch and browse while we roll out the red carpet for you. (Ok, maybe not actual red carpet, but we will have in-store promotions, sidewalk sales, even some bites and bevvies while you shop. Austin is the Live Music Capital of the world, so who knows, we may have some accoustic accompaniment.)

milk + honey is joining in on the fun. If you’re already strolling the area, make sure to stop by our downtown location. We’ll be giving away a free gift to everyone who comes in the spa.

Mother’s Day Makeover Contest winner – Nanette

June 1, 2011

We love our mothers. That’s why milk + honey held a Mother’s Day Makeover Contest. Thank you so much for all of your entries. It was wonderful reading all of the stories on what makes mothers so special. It was very difficult to pick a winner for our downtown and Galleria locations, but we pick two. We can’t wait to do it all over again next year.

Click here for our downtown winner’s story.
Nanette is the Galleria winner. Her mother Nancy nominated her and wrote the entry below.

Nanette - BEFORE

Last year, just before her 42nd birthday, Nannette got the life-changing news that she had breast cancer. It was so unexpected, as there is no history of breast cancer in our family. Nanette has been a vegetarian for many years, and is now a vegan. She loves to do yoga and to walk and to keep herself healthy. She is a single mother of a 12-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son.

Nanette went through her double mastectomy, chemotherapy and reconstruction with the help of wonderful friends and an amazing attitude. She decided to wear glittery eyeshadow, lipstick, sprinkle glitter in her hair and wear glittery t-shirts and shoes to every cancer treatment to help herself feel cute and sparkly. She started a blog and called it “Glitter Every Day,” in which she bared her soul. The blog made her friends and loved ones laugh, cry and become deeply aware of the reality of breast cancer.

She absolutely adores spas and massages, but the cancer treatment and recovery have been very expensive, so she has had to give up her favorite indulgence for a while. Also, she has to constantly battle the feeling that she is unattractive and different because of her breast cancer treatment, so winning a Mother’s Day Makeover would be so wonderful and welcomed by Nanette.

Her breast cancer diagnosis was a huge setback, but she is back on her feet and grateful for her life, her family and friends.

Mother’s Day Makeover Contest winner – Laurie

Laurie is our downtown winner. Her daughter Kristin nominated her and wrote the entry below.

Laurie - BEFORE

My mother has worked hard to raise all four children (all girls). She works to this day to make sure that we all have what we need. While growing up we all (six family members) shared a two-bedroom trailer, but we never felt the need for more. We were given so much love by my mother. She would do all the house work on top of her daily job of cleaning other peoples homes. She would make a hot meal every night, may it be fish my father had caught or a quick meal that we could afford.

My mother also took great care of my granny before she passed away. Living on the same property as my parents, my granny needed extra help after her husband was killed in a car wreck. Her health went bad, so my mother drove her to doctors appointments and to many hospital visits. To the end on my granny’s life my mother was by her side. She did everything for her.

Now three of us girls are grown and out of the house. My mother still cleans homes to provide for her family. If anyone asks my mom for help she never says NO. Even if she doesn’t have the time, she will always help. With all the work that my mother has done in her life, she deserves to be treated like a queen. I believe this makeover would mean the world to her and give her some much overdue down time.
