Golden Globes 2015: The Looks We Loved

January 12, 2015

Award show season is here, and with it, a fresh batch of star-studded looks straight from the red carpet. Last night’s Golden Globe Awards ushered in a sea of apple-red, intricate black lace, and body-skimming gowns, as well as a noticeable return to classic Hollywood beauty “moves.” Think dramatic waves to rival equally dramatic eyes, matte red lips, and enviable haircuts. Our favorite looks from the evening, listed below, are simply meant to inspire our own hair/styling routines — or if you’re feeling a bit gutsy (and are currently sporting long hair), it might just be time to try the “the chop” á la Sienna Miller. Just sayin’.

Amy Adams

When we think Old Hollywood glamour-turned-modern day beauty, Amy Adams tops our list. For the Globes, makeup artist Stephen Sollitto chose a subtle champagne-meets-copper eye to complement her soft waves and ice blue Atelier Versace gown.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Love her or hate her, she knows how to make her mark. This time, it’s in cotton-candy pink with a low-key twist. Unlike her more iconic pink moment — in pale pink Ralph Lauren at the 1999 Oscars — Paltrow’s Michael Kors gown was a sportier version of sexy, a silhouette that her stylist David Babaii highlighted with ’70s hair: straight from the crown to the jawline, and then perfectly undone, loose curls to finish.

Viola Davis

Davis rarely makes the wrong move on the red carpet, case in point. Not only was her ruby-tinged Donna Karan gown a source of bold color choice, her eyes and lips also proved to be statement-worthy. The juxtaposition of shimmer-y mauve eyeshadow and classic red lip resulted in one seriously glamorous look.

Sienna Miller

This British beauty tied for Best Dressed and Best Haircut of the night — at least in our books. If ever there were real-time motivation to go for “the chop,” this would be it. Her barely-there makeup, courtesy of makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury, allowed us to focus on the gorgeous embellishments of her Miu Miu gown and, of course, that ridiculously awesome bedhead bob.

Emma Stone

Stone knows how to wear dramatic looks with ease. Chanel makeup artist Rachel Goodwin not only emphasized the redhead’s feline eyes with a smokey cat eye, she also paired it with a soft berry-hued lip and tousled waves. It’s one-part dressed up, one-part just-woke-up, and we love it.

Baby, It’s Cold Outside – How’s Your Skin Doing?

November 13, 2014

{Guest post by one of milk + honey’s expert estheticians, Bella G.}

One of the most frequent questions I receive is “how often should I get a facial?”… The thing is — there’s no standard answer. Instead, here are the factors and questions I ask to frame a response and “plan of action” for the best type of skincare for you.

What type of skin do you have?
– Someone with active, chronic acne might need to initially come more often (sometimes as much as every week in the beginning), so the esthetician can perform extractions to help stop the breakout cycle and closely monitor how the skin is doing on the prescribed at-home skincare.
– Mature skin benefits from monthly facials to stimulate circulation and remove dead skin cells that dull the complexion.
– Normal and sensitive skin types can go for longer periods, but I think all skin types should come in at least quarterly.

What’s your budget?
– I’d rather see you once a year than not at all. This gives us a chance to talk about your skin. I can answer any questions you have and can set you up with an at-home skincare regimen that meets the needs of your face and wallet.
– Choosing to invest in your skin this year? Come every month. Then we can add peels, make sure that you are on some form of vitamin A as well as an epidermal growth factor, and regularly apply micro-currents to the skin to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin.

Is there an issue you want to focus on?
– Hyper-pigmentation can be radically reduced with a series of peels spaced two to three weeks apart.
– Acne can benefit from regular extractions and an occasional peel to help purge any deep congestion.
– Just want to relax? There is something about having another person’s hands on your face, head, neck and shoulders that creates a deep state of calm. Facials are actually a great stress reliever!

I will say that the ideal is that I get to see you every month. Your outermost layer of skin (the stratum corneum) renews itself approximately every 28 days. Getting a monthly facial means that you can enjoy having a refreshed appearance immediately and better penetration of any products you are using at home. Over time, you get the benefits of having your new cells replicated by the now healthier treated cells, and all your products will work faster and more effectively. There is definitely a cumulative effect to having regular facials.

– Increases blood circulation allowing for optimal skin health.
– Decreases puffiness, sallow complexion, and detoxifies by stimulating the lymphatic system.
– Facial massage smooths fine lines and promotes collagen production.
– Cleanses pores on a deeper level, preventing the stretching and widening of pores that can happen overtime with unchecked accumulation of oil and debris.
– Helps even tone and lighten dark spots.
– Slows down the aging process.

You can’t underestimate the value of taking a little time out for yourself every so often. Energy follows thought, and what we choose to focus on can — and does — bring about real change.

Our Staff Picks: March Beauty Favorites

March 19, 2014

poducts2

“My favorite service is our new Ultimate Pedicure. Getting a pedicure is usually about maintenance for me: soft feet, seasonal polish and a moment to relax. However, when I finally start to relax, my pedicure is usually ending and I’m left wanting more. The Ultimate Pedicure provides that extra massage and luxury that I am looking for. Almost a full hour and a half devoted to my tired calves and achy feet is the best!” — Teresa S., manager at milk + honey Hill Country Galleria

“I love Radiance from CosMedix for my daytime serum. It gives me a supple glow that I get compliments on all the time! I strive for healthy skin and Radiance helps me achieve just that. It feels great under my mineral makeup, too. A trick I like to use is to always make sure my face is damp (toner is great for this) before applying serum — this allows you to use less product (one pump is sufficient) and it spreads much easier.” — Brooke M., assistant manager at milk + honey 2nd Street District

“The Signature Plus Facial is a dream come true for mature, stressed, or damaged skin. You enjoy our signature facial with cleansing, toning, extractions, mask, massage and moisture, then are treated to particle-free microdermabrasion that leaves your skin so soft and glowing. This treatment has helped me get rid of hyper-pigmentation and feel more confident about my skin.” — Emilie S., milk + honey HR

“My favorite can’t-live-without product is Kevin.Murphy Young Again oil. It’s great for all hair types and not greasy. It has repaired my damaged ends and continues to keep my hair shiny and healthy. Pro tip: it’s great on dry skin, too!” — Katie A., manager at milk + honey Arboretum Market

“I love Reflect by CosMedix! It’s a spray-on sunscreen that is light and not greasy. With the sunnier summer months approaching, it is essential! It’s the best! The spray-on SPF by Coola is also the bomb. It’s great for chasing down my nephews at the pool and spraying them quickly and easily. My nephew Connor loves it too. He says it makes his skin feel silky.” — Kelley W., assistant manager at milk + honey Hill Country Galleria

“Designed to thicken and plump thinning hair and prevent hair loss, the Kevin Murphy Plumping.Line helps with hair growth while boosting the appearance of fullness. I can tell an immediate difference in the texture and density of my hair after I shower. It’s milk + honey’s newest miracle.” — Summer L., general manager at milk + honey

“‘A Solution’ in the ResultsRx line is my fave. I love it because it has both vitamin A and alphahydroxys. It helps to break up dead layers of skin and promote faster cell turnover.” — Maureen, esthetician at milk + honey Hill Country Galleria

“I’m loving the Citrus Blossom Dermabrasion by EcoInventive. This all-organic exfoliant smells great and leaves your skin feeling like you just got a facial. It has a jojoba oil base so it moisturizes while it exfoliates. Pro tip: cleanse using the Citrus Blossom Dermabrasion, then cleanse once more with normal routine for freshest effect.” — Shawn, esthetician at milk + Honey Hill Country Galleria

“Aveda’s Inner Light Mineral Tinted Moisturizer is the perfect sunscreen + hydration + skin tone secret weapon for you. Infused with finely-powdered tourmaline, it boosts skin’s energy and radiance and stays on for the entire day — even through exercise.” — Emilie S, milk + honey HR

“Let’s not forget about Fresh Hair from Kevin Murphy – it’s the BEST! I can go much longer in between blowouts because it keeps my hair oil-free and smelling great.” — Brooke M., assistant manager at milk + honey 2nd Street District

“The Ultrasonic Treatment is my favorite. It is a short, relaxing service that leaves my skin glowing afterwards. If my skin is feeling dull, it brightens me right up!” — Chris W., milk + honey HR assistant

“One of my very favorites for perfect natural curls is the Deva Curl Light Defining Gel. With your hair wet, apply a generous amount to your hands and scrunch it up into your hair. When your hair is dry, shake the curls loose – the gel won’t leave any hard or sticky residue! Just soft beautiful curls.” — Alanah M., assistant manager at milk + honey 2nd Street District

Do You Color Your Hair? Have You Tried the Ammonia-Free Organic Color System?

March 7, 2014

1391771_10151907565279464_853586749_n

What makes the Organic Color System different from the rest? Our Organic Master Colorist, Kelli, has the answers.

This ammonia-free, oil-based color line will exceed your expectations while keeping your hair healthy and shiny. Kelli has been using the line almost exclusively for four years. She began her career at the Sassoon Academy and has worked as an educator for several color lines.

So, what exactly made her stick with Organic Color after 15 years in the industry? Simply put: no ammonia. After becoming a color specialist, she felt fatigued and was having a hard time with the ammonia smell that’s found in many color lines. While doing some research, she came across the Organic Color System and was thrilled to see what great results they offer without the use of ammonia. Since this fateful discovery, Kelli has become a certified educator for the brand. Her favorite thing about the Organic System is that it works for everyone. The color is shiny, there’s less fading, and it works great on all hair types. Win-win.

Ready to make your color appointment with Kelli? Click here for her availability at the Arboretum Market location.

Is Your New Year’s Fitness Resolution Giving You Sore Muscles? We Have the Solution.

January 14, 2014

So, you’ve made your New Year resolutions — namely, don’t skimp on the exercise, to eat healthier, and to remember to squeeze in dedicated “you” time every week. Now it’s time to follow through. It can be hard, it can be an uphill battle, and it can be a little discouraging… especially when the sore muscles (after an indulgent holiday hiatus) kick in.

Screen Shot 2014-01-13 at 3.18.55 PM

Our advice to you? Stick with your new fitness routine — you got this! But be sure to give those aches and pains a little extra TLC, too. Courtesy of our Hill Country Galleria location, here are a few milk + honey ways to keep morale high, your body stretched and limber, and your mind at ease. Hey, there’s a reason we were voted “Best Spa Exeperience” by Austin Fit Magazine:

–  Treat yourself to a sports massage. How is this different from, say, a Lux Massage? This full-body massage incorporates deep stretching and tissue manipulation to ease stiffness and pain in muscles and joints. It’s particularly useful for restoring mobility, preventing injuries, and relieving stress. In other words: athletes, fitness-minded folk, and people looking for a way to offset exercise-caused stiffness, what are you waiting for? Reserve your sports massage at milk + honey’s Hill Country Galleria location stat.

– We’ve got this magical potion — okay, it’s technically called Sore Muscle Bath & Body Oil No. 18 — that helps fight the not-so-fun soreness for you. This new milk + honey blend features Arnica oil, a potent anti-inflammatory, which speeds up the healing process while eucalyptus and other essential oils reduce joint pain and delight your senses.

– Have you ever heard of Arnica patches? We’ve got those too. And they’re life-savers. They’ll help treat bruises, sprains, and muscle pain.

– Finally, after the massage, the oil, and the patches, don’t forget about one crucial way you can help alleviate and prevent future soreness: use a foam roller. Among the many benefits of utilizing a foam roller? It smoothes and lengthens your muscles, and breaks up adhesions and scar tissue. You’ll also be setting yourself up for better blood circulation, which in turn speeds workout recovery and boosts performance. Lucky for you, we’ve got foam rollers on-site too.

Now, keeping your fitness resolution doesn’t have to be painful — in fact, it will feel really good.

Now Trending: The Bob

January 13, 2014

If last year’s hair craze was “the lob” — that’s a long short bob, in case you were wondering — then 2014 is already all about the bob. It’s chic, shapes/sculpts your face, and let’s face it, it’s one of the easier hair lengths to manage on a day-to-day basis. You can do an edgier cut (blunt layers), a softer one (reminiscent of a 1920s flapper bob), or have a little more fun with it and add some ombré while you’re at it.

Look to the most recent slew of celebrities to go short and blunt for proof of its now-trending popularity.

There’s also Michelle Dockery of ‘Downton Abbey,’ Lena Dunham, Elisabeth Moss of ‘Mad Men,’ and Kat Graham of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ doing it too.

Are you feeling the bob? With the New Year-new you resolutions and attitude set into motion, this is the time to experiment. Translation: chop it all off. And we’ve got just the place for you to do it…
