When you opt for a detox steam and massage from milk + honey, you’ll know from the description that it includes a body brushing, our signature massage with a delightful blend of rosemary, echinacea, eucalyptus, and geranium essential oils, and, of course, a steam treatment. But what are the benefits of steam, and why should you choose the detox steam and massage over any other body treatment to begin with?

While the menus and brochures from your favorite spa might provide the information you need to make a decision, chances are you’ll still have questions about your treatment prior to your appointment. What should you wear? What happens when you walk into the treatment room? Will your massage therapist leave you alone in the room? If it’s your first time, your questions and (and maybe a little apprehension) are completely understandable.

Ahead, we take a look at milk + honey’s Detox Steam and Massage. We’ll talk about the benefits of steam for your body (and why you may want to consider adding this treatment highlight to your spa experience), and we’ll also walk you through the process so you’ll know exactly what to expect when it’s time for your appointment.

Benefits of Steam for Your Body

Body steaming releases impurities and supports the immune system. Additionally, it triggers a “thermoregulating” effect in your body where the blood vessels in your skin dilate and stimulate your circulation. With improved blood flow comes a fresh delivery of nutrients and oxygen to your skin cells, and this imparts a healthy glow to your skin. Moreover, hot steam has the added benefit of warming and relaxing your muscles.

What to Expect During Your Detox Steam + Massage Treatment

To give you some insight into your detox steam and massage body treatment, we caught up with James Curry, Head of the Massage Department at the Austin Arboretum Market. James walks us through this spa service from beginning to end.

Step 1: You’ll walk into the steam treatment room, and your massage therapist will spend some time chatting with you to figure out why you’re there. He/she will determine if you have any contraindications for the treatment, such as:

  • Pregnancy
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Burns

If there are no contraindications for the detox steam and massage body treatment, your massage therapist will begin the treatment, and he/she will continue to walk you through each step of the process as they go. There are no surprises, and you won’t be caught off guard.

Step 2: The treatment begins with body brushing.

Step 3: The body brushing is followed by our Signature Massage with rosemary lemon and peppermint essential oils.

Step 4: After the massage, you’ll be guided to the steam tent, where you can relax and enjoy for 15 minutes while the steam does its work. You will not be left alone in the room. Very often, your massage therapist will offer a relaxing head and neck massage while you steam.

Step 5: Once your steam treatment is over, your therapist will remove the steam tent, and you’ll likely feel a rush of cold air.

Step 6: The damp drape will be removed, and a warmed, dry draped will be offered.

The drape changeout concludes the treatment; your therapist will leave the room and allow you to get dressed in private. From start to finish, milk + honey’s detox steam and massage lasts about 90 minutes, and the dry brush used in your session is yours to keep.
