Please Shop Local

November 26, 2010

On the biggest shopping day of the year, we’d like to ask all of our loyal Spa Partisans to shop local. Amidst the media frenzy of Black Friday and the huge lines outside of big box stores, it is easy to lose sight of the benefits of shopping local.

According to the Austin Independent Business Alliance:

Modest changes in consumer spending habits can generate substantial local economic impact. For every $100 in customer spending at a national chain, the total local economic impact is only $13. The same amount spent with a local merchant yields $45, more than three times the local economic impact.

milk + honey is a prime example of how local dollars benefit your friends and neighbors. In five years, we’ve grown to 125 employees who have subsidized health insurance, paid vacation, and other benefits. Compensating local staff rather than paying franchise fees or transferring funds to a corporate office certainly feels good and does good.

Out of town visitors often remark about how vibrant Austin’s retail and restaurant community is. And how diverse and independent it is. And how proud Austin is of its local businesses. It’s not a surprise that this environment leads to Austin wining accolades for its vibrant economy, vibrant arts scene, and innovation.

So, we’re asking you to support your local businesses this holiday season. Do some holiday shopping in Second Street District or along South Congress. Look for other choices through organizations such as AIBA or GoLocal.

And of course, gift certificates from milk + honey spa are a great way to keep it local.

Thanks Austin for all of your support of this local business!

Operation Turkey

November 21, 2010

Our very own Spa Partisan, Daniael, works with Operation Turkey, an organization that helps to organize local teams of volunteers – families, friends, and businesses – to cook, prepare, pack, and deliver thousands of hot meals and provide other necessities to many people in need.

Daniael recently asked milk + honey staff for donations of gently used coats, jackets, clothing, unopened toiletries (including minis from hotels) and non-perishable food items. She’ll be collecting these and delivering them on Tuesday night to Operation Turkey.

We thought this was a great cause so we would like to open up the donations to the greater Austin community. Feel free to drop off donations to our concierge staff at either of our spa locations by Tuesday at 7pm. Thank you for your support!

milk + honey Featured in Baltimore Magazine

November 17, 2010

In the travel blog of Charm City’s eponymous magazine, write Janelle Diamond talks about her visit to Austin.

First some good observations about how locally focused Austin is (yay!):

I think one of the biggest differences between Austin and many other cities is how much support the local shops receive—and other local vendors/designers. It’s such a healthy environment for a small, local business.

And then a nice visit to milk + honey:

My sister surprised me with a prenatal massage on my first day at the beautiful and calming Milk & Honey Spa in the 2nd Street District. It’s small and charming and I left there with a relaxation hangover.

Directions in Light

November 8, 2010

If you are curious about the artwork on the walls of the treatment rooms and in the lounge of the spa, look no further. milk + honey downtown currently features local artist Brooke Gassiot’s Directions in Light. Brooke says:

This is a series of contemporary sculptural wooden light boxes which are lit from within. The pieces incorporate found objects such as wire, vellum, fabric, painted slides, and coins alongside more traditional media such as paint and plexiglass.

We think that these atmospheric light boxes are a great addition to the experience of the spa.

Brooke’s art will be featured on the East Austin Studio tour in November.
