What Should You Wear to a Spa?

milk + honey Locker Room - Women Getting Dressed

First-time spa-goers tend to have a lot of questions, and rightly so, new experiences can be a bit stressful when you don’t know what to expect. Not to mention that when you have more questions than answers, a trip to the spa may not be the relaxing treat you thought it would be.

For those new to the spa experience, one of the most common questions asked is about the spa dress code.

The answer is that “spa clothes” don’t seem to vary much from spa to spa, and most places will provide a robe and slippers upon check-in. Once check-in is complete, clients are often led to a private room where they can change. If you’re looking for more information about spa etiquette and what you should wear, here’s everything you need to know before your visit.

DO I NEED TO BRING A ROBE AND SLIPPERS TO THE SPA?

You do not need to bring a robe and slippers to the spa, most spas will have these ready for you when you arrive. Depending on the treatments you receive throughout your visit, you may also switch to a new robe if it gets dirty or damp. The same also goes for towels, your spa should provide these for you so there is no need to bring your own. Additionally, some spas may also provide other amenities including showers and toiletries for use before and after your visit.

WILL SPAS OFFER DIFFERENT SIZES OF ROBES AND SLIPPERS?

Most spas will offer different sizes for robes and slippers to ensure guests feel comfortable and relaxed throughout their visit. The range and availability of sizes offered by the spa you’re visiting may vary depending on where you go, so if you are concerned about properly fitting attire it’s best to contact your spa before your appointment.

WHAT SHOULD YOU WEAR UNDER A ROBE?

What you wear under your robe will be highly dependent on what services you choose. If you choose to wear nothing under your robe, that’s completely fine. If you’re just going in for a massage, your underwear should suffice. It’s truly up to you.

Additionally, your massage therapist or esthetician will also let you know if anything else needs to be removed and you’ll be given time to privately undress before starting your treatment. For messy spa treatments that involve wraps, mud, and oils, your therapist will offer you a pair of disposable underwear so yours doesn’t get wet, dirty, or otherwise compromised.

It may be worth noting here, too, that spa therapists are taught special draping techniques, and only the part of your body that’s being worked on will be exposed at any given time. No doubt, these draping techniques have the added benefit of keeping any potential embarrassment or any body consciousness to a minimum.

WHAT TYPE OF FOOTWEAR SHOULD YOU WEAR?

As noted earlier, most spas will provide slippers or plastic flip-flops for you to wear during your visit, and when in doubt, you can always bring your own. However, if you do bring your own slippers or shoes their use may be restricted to certain areas of the spa for hygienic reasons. If this is your first visit to a new spa, it may be best to ask for some guidance when you book your appointment.

WHERE DO I PUT MY PERSONAL BELONGINGS WHEN VISITING THE SPA?

There’s no need to bring a bag to carry around your personal belongings while at the spa, as most spas provide guests with a locker to use during their visit. Even so, if possible we recommend leaving any valuables you don’t absolutely need at home such as electronics and jewelry.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO STAY IN YOUR COMFORT ZONE

Remember that discomfort is counterproductive to a relaxing day at the spa, and body consciousness doesn’t help either. The important thing to keep in mind is that you should only undress to the point where you still feel comfortable. Also, be sure to communicate with your spa therapist and let them know what you’re comfortable with. Moreover, if you’re nervous, don’t be afraid to share that with your therapist as well. You’re not the first jumpy client, and you certainly won’t be that last — your therapist may be able to offer some additional help with a trick or two to soothe shaky nerves.
