what to know before you wax

July 17, 2018

It’s that time of year again. Pool parties and beach vacays can often mean one thing: waxing bikini lines and beyond. Though many favor rocking body hair these days, (you’ve gotta do you!) we’re sharing some pro-tips to make the most of your next waxing appointment. We caught up with the ever-glowy (and incredibly kind) milk + honey esthetician, Jessica H., for her hair-removal best practices.

Grow it out

Jessica says the hair length should be at least a quarter of an inch long. “This means grown out approximately two weeks after shaving and three to four weeks after waxing. The hair needs to be long enough for the wax to grab the hair and pull it out by its root.”

Don’t forget to hydrate

“Hydrated healthy skin is very important,” says Jessica. “This eliminates hair breakage and skin lifting. Hydrated skin also helps eliminate ingrown hairs from forming between waxing services.”

…and exfoliate

Jessica also encourages exfoliation to make waxing easier and prevent ingrown hairs. “Layers of dead skin can interfere with the quality of the service,” she says. “Exfoliating the skin will ensure a more comfortable service and thorough removal of the hair.”

Know your wax

“If your skin is prone to ingrown hairs — especially on the bikini line — request that hard wax is used in your service,” Jessica advises.

Use product post-wax

“Using a post-wax serum that promotes skin cell turnover, an anti-bacterial environment, and hydrates the skin in one multi-action formula is a must,” Jessica insists. “At milk + honey, we carry Flawless and Cosmedix Pure Enzymes — both are really popular retail items that are used by our clients.”

Hold off on breaking a sweat

Jessica recommends waiting 24 hours after waxing to engage in extreme perspiration (i.e. hot yoga, running, biking, etc.) This includes direct sunlight for excessive periods of time, steam showers and baths as well as chlorinated pools and hot tubs. “Try to keep the waxed area clean and hydrated,” she says.”  “Keeping the body cool and hydrated will inhibit any skin reactions and irritations.”

what you should know about hair hydration

July 12, 2018

Everyone knows your skincare regimen needs a little TLC during the sunny, summer months, but have you ever considered your hair routine? Personally, I find myself stepping up my hair hydration game between May and Octoberish. (That’s summer when you live in Austin.) I prefer to let my hair air dry, but Texan summer heat + my natural waves = an often frizzy, not super chill look on my part. I’ve tried Lee From America’s famous #cocobun, of course, but I needed insider info. During a blowout at milk + honey, I found the answers c/o Kate Allen, a very knowledgeable stylist.

swap it: four ways to clean up your beauty routine

April 30, 2018

This month, we launched #WhyWeSayYesTo / #WhyWeSayNoTo: an online conversation highlighting ingredients we’ll never use and what we choose instead. Here’s a wrap-up of our first few suggestions to clean up your beauty routine — one product at a time.

Hand Purifier

Swap your ordinary hand sanitizer for milk + honey’s Hand Purifier. The handbag-friendly essential is made with natural alcohol — distilled from denatured lavender oil. while other hand sanitizers strip + dry your skin, our cleaner ingredients are designed to refresh and soothe.

Lip Balm

Acting as the base in our Lip Butters and Lip Polishes, organic virgin coconut oil deeply moisturizes and nourishes dry lips. Most lip balms in your bag are likely made of petrolatum (or petroleum jelly), which creates a barrier over your lips and skin — preventing any moisture from being absorbed. Instead, we stick to the clean ingredients found in nature — the ones that actually work.

Deodorant

There’s a reason everyone’s switching to natural deodorant. Antiperspirants use harmful ingredients like aluminum to clog your pores, which disrupts your natural detox process. that’s why we say yes to effective natural ingredients like baking soda + essential oils in our Cream Deodorant. our effective formulation will keep you smelling fresh while allowing your body the detox it needs.

Fragrance

When you see “fragrance” on an ingredient list, it can mean any number of chemicals are hidden in the product. many “fragrances” are synthetic and contain hidden pthalates, which are known endocrine disruptors. In short — you don’t know exactly what you’re signing up for. We believe in transparency, which is #WhyWeSayNoTo artificial fragrances. instead, we choose to use pure essential oils — aka no hidden phthalates, preservatives, or parabens.

how to survive the last week of Mercury in retrograde

April 9, 2018

If you’ve used social media at all recently, you’re surely aware Mercury is in retrograde. Every once in a while, the planet becomes our “scapegoat” for the miscommunications and misfortunes we experience. Why is that? milk + honey reached out to our Energy Catalyst, Stacy Davenport, for tips on how to stay positive during the homestretch of this unpredictable time. Today, we’re sharing her advice for keeping it together for the last week of Mercury-in-retrograde.

At the Office

  • Wipe down the surface of your desk and organize the items on the surface. You want to create visual quietness.
  • Put files away into file cabinets.
  • Bring fresh flowers and place them near your computer screen to absorb the energetic negativity.

At Home

  • Sweep your entry area daily with the intention to clear away any energy that may be blocking your path in life.
  • Dust all surfaces in your home, and while doing so, thank the space for providing you support for your life.
  • Sweep the floors and vacuum the carpets, and while doing so, visualize that any dirt and dust be removed from your home; therefore, unblocking your path to fulfillment.
  • Wash your bedding and towels with a ½ cup of sea salt. This clears any psychic and energetic debris that you’ve released while you’ve slept.
  • Clear your car of unnecessary stuff and take it for a thorough cleaning at the car wash. Cars represent our emotional body.
  • Have a beautiful bouquet of flowers in your home and place them where you can see them as you move about your home.

“The end of this Mercury retrograde is a powerful time to complete the incompletes so the new energy can fully activate and flow blessings into your life.”

– Stacy Davenport

milk + honey Partners with MOODxMOSS

March 7, 2018

With wellness at the forefront of all things beauty and innovation, SXSW is introducing a Wellness Expo to its 2018 conference — and milk + honey will be there! Come see us in Booth #401 on Saturday, March 10th + Sunday, March 11th. You can expect product samples, giveaways, and other exciting partnerships. One of the most anticipated partnerships? Aura photography from MOODxMOSS.

If you’re wondering how aura photography works, you’re not alone. We’re breaking down the energy-forward artform with MOODxMOSS founder, Carrie Moss.

In a nutshell, how does aura photography work?

The Aura Imaging System, by Guy Coggins, utilizes biofeedback technology. The system measures the electrical potential along the meridian points of the palm of the hand, then an algorithm converts that information into an electrical frequency and displays this as the colors and patterns of the aura.

What does your aura look like? Is it ever-changing?

Yes, auras are ever-changing. They shift depending on where you are at emotionally, physically, and spiritually. I think one of the interesting things about getting a visual representation of one’s aura is that over time you can see patterns emerge. My aura is primarily red and orange when I am traveling with MOOD on the road, and when I am home in Austin, it is more rainbow-ish.

What’s the most surprising aura reading you’ve ever experienced?

I love it when I see Spirit Guides show up in aura photos. They look like streaks or bright pinpoint lights!

What inspired you to start MOODxMOSS?

I have been a photographer and spiritual seeker for over 20 years. A friend of mine told me about the AuraCam and I was intrigued. I’ve learned that when an idea keeps popping back into your mind it is time to listen! So after about six months of research and thinking about it, I decided to launch MOODxMOSS.

What are you grateful for this SXSW?

I am most grateful to be partnering with milk + honey for the Wellness Expo. I love that SXSW created a new segment of the conference to include the wellness community. I feel and see a shift happening and it is exciting to be part of it.

The SXSW Wellness Expo is free + open to the public.

seven ways to stay grounded

February 26, 2018

Staying grounded is easier said than done. From small, daily stressors to bigger, fast-paced events, it’s necessary to be mindful of staying grounded. This month, we focused a great deal on reconnecting — in relationships, with yourself, and with the space around you. Now, let’s wrap it up with seven milk + honey recommended ways to keep your cool.

Call a friend or family member

It’s easy to have a false sense of closeness these days. After all, we use Facebook updates to represent life events and Instagram Stories to share our day-to-day. What could we be missing? Pick up the phone and call a long-distance pal, and you’ll find out. While social media does a lot to connect us, our online lives are curated and incomplete. There’s nothing like hearing the sound of your BFF’s voice as they tell you the good, bad, and the ugly. Just hearing a familiar voice can be extremely grounding and flat-out comforting.

Turn off your phone

While phones are great for say, calling an old friend (nudge, nudge), it’s nice to schedule intentional time apart from technology. We all know how it feels to be sucked into the world of eternal scrolling and it can be extremely draining — for both your time and your mood. Try to block off time first thing when you awake and right before bedtime to leave your phone face down and out of sight. Use this as your time to recharge and reconnect.

Incorporate CBD Oil

Ahhh, CBD oil. Before we go any further, let’s be clear — the hemp-derived oil is non-psychoactive and provides relaxation without intoxication. In some cases, CBD oil is ingested (try it in your next smoothie) or it can be used topically.

We love Mary’s Nutritionals patches and gel pen to provide topical relief for pain management. As of this month, both are carried at milk + honey locations.

Revisit an old favorite

What’s your favorite book? Movie? Vinyl album? Revisit that. Comfort can arise from familiarity and you may even get a dose of sweet nostalgia along with it. Our old favorites are still our favorites for a reason: they make us feel something.

Reserve a massage

Massages are an essential strategy to reconnect with yourself and improve your mood. You may think we’re biased, but there’s actual science to back it up. Studies have shown stress hormones lowering as much as 31% while dopamine and serotonin rose about 30% post-massage.

Explore milk + honey massages.

Make your sleep habitat a haven

Sleeping is such an important part of reconnecting with your best self. So, why not optimize your sleeping situation? Stacy Davenport, milk + honey’s go-to Feng Shui expert and energy catalyst recommends investing in hibernation. As she says, “Let your master bedroom be luscious.”

Some of our favorite additions:

  • New sheets and bedding
  • Blackout curtains
  • Silk pillowcases
  • Silk sleeping masks
  • Sound machines
  • Sunrise simulating alarm clocks (so much nicer than your iPhone alarm)

Take a bath

It’s no secret that we’re proponents of #TheArtOfTheBath at milk + honey. Whether it’s a quick, 20-minute dip or a lengthier, more indulgent escape, the bath can serve as a tool for reconnection.

Unless your phone has a waterproof case, the simple act of being in the bath takes technology out of the picture. It’s the perfect time to open that book you’ve been meaning to finish. Bathtime is also a great excuse to catch up on your favorite podcast or new music. Try to think of #TheArtOfTheBath as a five-sensory experience. You can indulge with essential scents, relaxing sounds, healing ingredients, a great book, and a glass of wine — if you insist. (I totally do.)
