At Curls Night Out, the most asked for look was — without a doubt — “the Kate.” This versatile look can be worn on curly or straight hair, on land or sea, and in the office or to a night out with friends. One of the most common questions we received during Curls Night Out was, “how can I wear ‘the Kate’ with second-day hair?”

Our talented Hill Country Galleria stylist, Virginia, showed us how to take your beachy second-day hair to the next level with this bohemian faux-braid tutorial. Get the look now.

What You’ll Need:

  1. To achieve this look, you’ll need to start with second-day waves. Second-day hair gives your locks more bounce, volume, and texture, which are all important for this straight-from-the-ocean braided look.
  2. Next, prep your hair with Kevin.Murphy’s Hair.Resort spray, Doo.Over, and Aveda’s Air Control. These products will enhance your tousled, beachy waves, tame fly-aways, and give you added volume and texture.
  3. For this tutorial, you’ll need a couple of bobby pins and three clear hair rubber bands.

Step 2. Further down the hair, secure your hair with a clear rubber band.

Step 3. Next take pieces from the outside of your hair and loop them around the clear rubber band. Then hold both pieces with a bobby pin. For added volume, gently tug hair out of the bobby pin.

Step 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 twice.
